St. Mary’s est la plus grande île de l’archipel des Scilly (1800 habitants) et le point de départ des excursions vers les autres îles. Mesurant moins de 6,5 km², St. Mary’s n’est pas exactement ce qu’on pourrait appeler un grand centre animé, mais avec ses liaisons maritimes et aériennes, elle constituera sans doute la première escale de votre visite.
Hugh Town est le principal centre de l’île, avec ses magasins, ses banques, ses églises, son bureau de poste, ses cafés, ses galeries, ses restaurants, ses pubs et son merveilleux musée. La ville compte trois jolies plages à proximité immédiate, Porthcressa, avec une aire de jeu pour enfants toute proche ; Town Beach, l’endroit idéal pour observer les allers et venues sur le quai ; et Porthmellon, qui abrite également le centre de voile.
Le Scillonian III, le ferry de passagers qui dessert l’île, accoste quotidiennement sur le quai. Le quai de St. Mary’s est aussi le lieu de départ pour se rendre sur les autres îles ou pour partir en excursion.
Située plus près de l’aéroport, Old Town est l’autre « grand » centre de St. Mary’s, avec sa belle plage, sa réserve naturelle, son église, où Sir Harold Wilson est enterré, son aire de jeu pour les tout-petits, son magasin, son pub et ses cafés.
Loin de l’agitation relative de ces deux centres, St. Mary’s est un havre de paix paisible, qui regorge de trésors cachés. Le littoral est une suite de longues plages de sable blanc désertes, de criques rocheuses spectaculaires, d’étonnants paysages marins et de remarquables sites archéologiques, sans oublier les superbes promenades et paysages le long des sentiers côtiers et de randonnée.

Tamarisk is a new gallery in the centre of Hugh Town showcasing artwork by local painters and craftspeople as well as arts and crafts from further afield. Artists include Imogen Bone, C N Smith, Sue Lewington and Oriel Hicks. Locally produced jewellery, cards and gifts are also available. Several of the craftspeople exhibiting work are based locally at Phoenix Craft Studios, Porthmellon Business Park.

The Phoenix Craft studios and workshops comprise seven individual craftspeople, many of whom will teach their skills to visitors. visitors can paint glass roundels, ceramic mugs and plates or fabric bags and tee-shirts. Beaded jewellery and silk scarf painting classes are open to all age groups too. Adults (over 14 years) also have the option of doing a three hour class in Tiffany glass, learning to to cut, copper-foil and solder coloured glass into a light-catcher to take home.
