About

Augustus Smith arrived on Scilly in 1834, bought the lease from the Duchy of Cornwall, and brought order and prosperity to the islands. The means he used were not always popular, and his reputation is of a man fair but hard. Sam Llewellyn, Smith's great-great nephew and biographer, explores his life and times, and reveals fascinating details about the history of Scilly as well as the human side of a character as eccentric as he was effective -  accompanied by a dazzling series of nineteenth-century visuals, many hitherto unseen.
