St. Mary es la más grande de las islas Sorlingas (con una población de 1.800 habitantes) y constituye el portal de entrada al resto de islas. Con una superficie de apenas 4 kilómetros cuadrados, no puede decirse que sea precisamente un lugar bullicioso, pero sus conexiones de transporte aéreo y marítimo la convierten en la primera parada de tu visita.
Hugh Town es el principal núcleo urbano y cuenta con una amplia variedad de servicios: tiendas, bancos, iglesias, una oficina de correos, cafeterías, galerías de arte, restaurantes y pubs, además del maravilloso museo. Tiene tres preciosas playas: Porthcressa, con un parque infantil muy cerca; Town Beach, el lugar ideal para contemplar la actividad del muelle; y Porthmellon, que alberga el club de vela.
El muelle es donde atraca diariamente el ferry de pasajeros, el Scillonian III. También es el lugar desde el que zarparás si te hospedas en alguna de las otras islas o si sales a realizar una excursión en barco.
La otra población “importante” de St Mary es Old Town, cerca del aeropuerto. Tiene una preciosa playa, una reserva natural, la Iglesia de Old Town – donde está enterrado Sir Harold Wilson –, un parque infantil, una tienda, un pub y diversas cafeterías.
En el interior, lejos del relativo ajetreo, la isla de St. Mary es un tranquilo refugio lleno de tesoros escondidos. A lo largo del litoral se extienden amplias playas desiertas de arena blanca, magníficas calas rocosas, espectaculares paisajes, sorprendentes yacimientos arqueológicos, preciosos paseos y vistas panorámicas que recorren varios kilómetros de rondas costeras, caminos rurales y senderos naturales.

There are daily trips to the islands and out to see the wildlife and lighthouses. Boats leave from 10:15am and return until 4:45pm. The service is seven days a week from just before Easter or the beginning of April until the end of October. There are evening trips available through the main part of the season.

We are a friendly and reliable taxi service based on St. Mary’s, working seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. We have two vehicles available for hire, one carrying four passengers and one carrying six passengers. The larger vehicle has two integrated baby/booster seats so children can be transported safely and comfortably. We are available for a quick taxi trip to get you from A to B, as well as more leisurely tours of the island.
