La splendida St. Mary’s: l'isola ideale per dedicarsi a numerose attività o all’ozio più assoluto
St. Mary’s è l’isola più grande delle Scilly (con una popolazione di 1.800 abitanti) e si propone come il punto d’accesso al resto delle isole. Con un’area inferiore ai 6,5 km2, l’isola non è estremamente movimentata ma dati i suoi collegamenti via aerea e via mare, è molto probabile che sia questo il primo porto di scalo di ogni visita alle Scilly.
Hugh Town è un centro nevralgico in cui si trovano negozi, banche, chiese, l’ufficio postale , il bar, gallerie, ristoranti e pub, oltre a un magnifico museo. Presenta inoltre tre splendide spiagge a poca distanza l’una dall’altra: Porthcressa, dotata di un’area gioco per bambini nelle vicinanze; Town Beach, il punto perfetto per osservare il viavai del molo; e Porthmellon che ospita anche il centro di vela.
Il molo (in inglese “the Quay”) è il punto in cui il traghetto Scillonian III attracca ogni giorno ed è anche il punto da cui viaggerete se soggiornate in una delle altre isole o se prendete una barca turistica per un’escursione da St. Mary’s.
La Old Town è il secondo “maggiore” centro abitato di St. Mary’s, più vicino all’aeroporto e con una splendida spiaggia, una riserva naturale, l’antica chiesa di Old Town Church dove è sepolto Sir Harold Wilson, un parco giochi per bambini, un negozio, un pub e alcuni bar.
Nell’entroterra, lontano dalla zona più movimentata, St. Mary’s offre un’oasi di pace ricca di tesori nascosti. La costa presenta ampie distese di spiagge deserte di sabbia bianca, suggestive calette tra le rocce, splendidi paesaggi marini, sorprendenti siti archeologici, passeggiate e scenari mozzafiato lungo chilometri di costa, sentieri di campagna e percorsi naturalistici.

We are a friendly and reliable taxi service based on St. Mary’s, working seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. We have two vehicles available for hire, one carrying four passengers and one carrying six passengers. The larger vehicle has two integrated baby/booster seats so children can be transported safely and comfortably. We are available for a quick taxi trip to get you from A to B, as well as more leisurely tours of the island.

There are daily trips to the islands and out to see the wildlife and lighthouses. Boats leave from 10:15am and return until 4:45pm. The service is seven days a week from just before Easter or the beginning of April until the end of October. There are evening trips available through the main part of the season.
There is an attractive special offer on purchases of ten or more tickets. We can cater for special groups and parties. Made up of the ten largest boats operating from St Mary's, we are the prime mover of visitor traffic.Read more »

The Phoenix Craft studios and workshops comprise seven individual craftspeople, many of whom will teach their skills to visitors. visitors can paint glass roundels, ceramic mugs and plates or fabric bags and tee-shirts. Beaded jewellery and silk scarf painting classes are open to all age groups too. Adults (over 14 years) also have the option of doing a three hour class in Tiffany glass, learning to to cut, copper-foil and solder coloured glass into a light-catcher to take home. Tamarisk is a new gallery in the centre of Hugh Town showcasing artwork by local painters and craftspeople as well as arts and crafts from further afield. Artists include Imogen Bone, C N Smith, Sue Lewington and Oriel Hicks. Locally produced jewellery, cards and gifts are also available. Several of the craftspeople exhibiting work are based locally at Phoenix Craft Studios, Porthmellon Business Park.
