Getting Around

Discover the wonders of Scilly: on foot, by bike, on horseback, by boat

One of the simplest pleasures when staying on Scilly is to go exploring. Between them, the five inhabited islands have more than 60 miles of trails and tracks and approximately 9 miles of paved road, as well as (of course!) the beautiful waters that surround them.

There are numerous ways to get around so you can set your itinerary and explore Scilly at your own pace. On St. Mary’s, the largest island, you can take a bus, take a taxi tour, hire a buggy, ride a bike, hack or simply walk. Nothing is too far!

On Tresco you can hire bikes or a golfing buggy to get around (you will need to book in advance for golf buggies) - but most will tell you that the best way to explore all the off islands is on foot. And enjoy getting between them all by tripper boat! As a general rule, it’s worth noting that signposting is more established on the off islands than it is on St. Mary's, so purchasing one of Scilly’s infamous “blue paper maps” from the Tourism Information Centre located on Porthcressa Beach will be a very small investment well worth its return.

In fact, the Tourist Information Centre has very helpful staff and maps galore, as well as an in-depth knowledge of all that is going on around the islands. Pop in, or call them on 01720 424031. If you use Twitter, you can follow @ScillyTIC for everything that’s going on day-by-day.

However you choose to get around, enjoy your island adventures!
