A photo capturing “Isla” a salty Scillonian seadog who spends her summer days island-hopping aboard “Osprey”, has won this year’s top prize in the annual Isles of Scilly Photography Competition. Luis Gomes, a supply chain analyst from New Barnet, North London, took the photo entitled “Captain’s Canine” when boating between Bryher and St. Mary’s with his fiancée on the beautiful archipelago.

His photo was selected as the outright winner from 35 shortlisted photos from across eight categories after he polled some 830 votes following a public vote online on www.visitislesofscilly.com. Luis wins a three-night break for two at Karma St. Martin’s hotel and return flights from Land’s End.

A passionate amateur photographer, it was Luis’ first time to the Isles of Scilly. “My fiancée first visited Scilly about six years ago with her parents and loved it.  I moved to the UK two years ago and for our holiday last summer, she said she wanted to show me the most beautiful place in the country,” says Luis.  “I love taking photos and I bought a new camera especially for this trip. I thought ‘if I am visiting the most beautiful place in England, I have to be able to take home high quality memories’. Regarding this specific photo,” he continues, “I saw Isla several times when we were out boating. I just thought she was fantastic – so happy to be on board and friendly with all the visitors. “I can’t wait to return next year to stay at Karma St. Martin’s,” says Luis. “We had an amazing time earlier this year, especially eating out,” he adds. “The quality of the food on Scilly, in particular the ice cream and sea food, is incredible! We’re timing our return in 2019 to coincide with the Taste of Scilly festival which I am looking forward to very much.”

This year’s Visit Isles of Scilly photography competition, which has run annually since 2014, saw close to 900 entries across 8 categories: Natural Scilly, Islands’ at Work, Secret Scilly, Taste of Scilly, An Island Playground, Escape to Scilly, Creative Scilly, and Our History & Heritage.

“We’re always delighted that this annual competition creates a lot of excitement and enthusiasm from our visitors,” says David Jackson, Executive Director, Visit Isles of Scilly (Islands’ Partnership). “Importantly, from our perspective, this competition really helps to augment Visit Isles of Scilly’s existing photographic library, with many featuring in our marketing materials. Luis’ photo, alongside a number of this year’s finalists will also feature in the forthcoming 2019 Isles of Scilly Guide."
