Excitement as Webb Ellis Trophy is presented on Scilly
The rugby legend Jason Leonard OBE joined the Cornish Pirates squad at the Five Islands School on Scilly yesterday for the start of the English leg of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour.
The entire school was invited for a photo opportunity before Jason inspired the students to get behind England's World Cup campaign this autumn and to join the thriving IOS rugby club here on the islands.
Many islanders also turned up to be photographed with Jason and the splendid Webb Ellis Cup, some bringing with them their memorabilia from the epic 2003 Rugby World Cup, won by England in Sydney, Australia.
The trophy arrived from Newport on Monday evening, and the ceremony took place Tuesday morning, before it was flown courtesy of RNAS Yeovilton to the Eden Project in Cornwall for the next leg of its grand tour.
Following the ceremony, which was organised by Adam May, a teacher at the Five Islands School and one of the IOS Rugby Club coaches, all the Five Island School students took part in a special rugby training morning, hosted by the Cornish Pirates.
