"Sky, Sea,Sand" wins 2016 Photo Competition
A self-employed joiner from Prestwich, Manchester has won the 2016 Isles of Scilly Photography Competition following an online public vote on VisitIslesOfScilly.com. Carl Farran won with his photograph entitled “Sky, Sea, Sand” after it received more than 1,200 votes. Carl wins a short break for two in 2017 at Tregarthen’s Hotel on St. Mary’s (with dinner on one evening) and two return boat tickets on the Scillonian III passenger ferry, courtesy of Isles of Scilly Travel.
Carl, who has visited the islands several times, is a keen amateur photographer and always keeps his camera close to hand. "It was whilst island-hopping to Tresco this summer that I noticed the wonderful sky, sea and sand photo opportunity, so I took a few shots, never thinking I would win a photography competition with one of them!" he says. "I am very pleased but also surprised. Perhaps I could become a part-time photographer as well as a joiner?” he jokes.
Carl first came to Scilly six years ago pursuing another of his passions: “I enjoy scuba diving and I came to Scilly initially in 2010 with a large group. We had such a good time, the diving was superb and we enjoyed great weather. When my wife saw the photos, she was determined to visit Scilly, too. We've now been to Scilly a couple of times together and we love it: the walks, the wildlife, the horse riding and, of course, the beaches. There's always something different to do, it's very relaxing and we find the restaurants all offer great food.”
This year's photography competition, which is run annually by the Islands' Partnership, saw more than 1,000 entries, a record since the competition started back in 2014. “Carl’s ‘Sky, Sea, Sand’ image is unmistakably Scilly and expresses exactly the essence of the islands in summertime. Because so many people can identify with the photo, it comes as no surprise that it won the Isles of Scilly Photography Competition,” says David Jackson, Executive Director, Islands' Partnership.
“We’re always delighted that the competition, now in its third year, creates a lot of excitement and enthusiasm from our visitors," he adds. "Importantly, this competition also helps to augment Visit Isles of Scilly’s existing photographic library, with many featuring in our marketing materials. Carl’s photo, alongside a number of this year’s finalists will also feature in the forthcoming 2017 Isles of Scilly Guide.”
