By Sea

Soak up the Cornish coastline as you cruise to the islands

Arriving in the Isles of Scilly by boat from Penzance after a 2 hour 45 minute mini-cruise is wonderful. As soon as you set sail aboard the Scillonian III, you’ll already sense the gentler pace of life; your journey allows you time to relax. The voyage also gives you a stunning seaside view of Cornwall’s quaint villages, the world-renowned open air Minack Theatre and the Land’s End peninsula. Quite often, the ship is joined and followed by pods of dolphins, a raft of seabirds and sometimes even basking sharks. So by the time you arrive in Scilly and disembark on the main island of St. Mary’s, you’re bound to be in holiday mode.

The Scillonian III runs between March and November six days a week, seven in high season. Generally speaking (exceptionally low tides withstanding), it leaves Penzance at 9.15am arriving in Scilly at 12 noon. It then leaves Scilly at 16.30 arriving in Penzance at 19.10pm.

The ship was refurbished for the 2013 season and now offers comfortable reclining seats for 450 passengers, a café bar, café, platform lift, baby-changing facilities and open-air deck seating.

One-way fares start at £45 for adults, £23.50 for 2-15 year olds and £12 for infants under 2 years. Visit Isles of Scilly Travel for more information and bookings. You can come to the Isles of Scilly for a day at a special rate of £39.50 return, £23 return for children and £13 for infants.

Cars are not allowed on the Scillonian III (except those that are craned on for residents), so if you're travelling down to Cornwall by car, you’ll have to park up in Penzance before you embark.  If you're staying in Penzance, you may find that your hotel keeps your car safe. Alternatively, there are specific car parking and park & ride options available. If you arrive in Penzance by train, it’s a 10-minute walk to Penzance Quay, or a short taxi ride. Be sure to allow yourself enough time to check in your luggage and collect your embarkation card.
