About
Having opened in September 2016, Tamarisk is a new gallery in the centre of Hugh Street, St Mary’s. It is located opposite 49 Degrees and is run by local glass artist Oriel Hicks and her daughter, Erica. As well as paintings and glass, it showcases locally made pottery, felt and jewellery together with quality, Cornish made art and crafts. On display year round are paintings by celebrated local artists Chris Smith, Sue Lewington and Imogen Bone alongside frequently changing work by visiting artists.
Scilly is a unique place with incredible light and draws artists from all over. It is an enviable destination for those who love art. Tamarisk stocks many distinctive pieces alongside unique gifts and as such, is a must for any visitor to the Isles of Scilly.
C N Smith
Having lived and worked on Scilly since 1980, Chris has always drawn and painted and has worked in a variety of mediums and styles. Inspired by the views around him, most recently Chris has concentrated on using acrylics to paint the evocative sea scenes found around every corner in Scilly. He says, “Recent seascapes in acrylic have shown the wilder energy and movement of the sea; or have captured the shoreline under changing skies.”
Imogen Bone
Originally moving to Cornwall from Scotland to study BA Hons Illustration at Falmouth College of Art, Imogen spent 10 years living and working in Scilly and being inspired by the sea and its changing environment. She says, “The coast makes me feel free and allows me to paint with the energy that it gives.”
Sue Lewington
Sue spent many years living and working at her North Farm Gallery on St Martin’s. She has and still works in a variety of mediums but is best known for her iconic pen and ink with watercolour work. Having been an artist and lived in West Cornwall all her life, she remains inspired by the coast and her love of islands.
