St. Agnes

L’estrema frontiera dell’Inghilterra, completamente selvaggia e incontaminata 

Situata all’estremità più sud-occidentale delle Scilly, St. Agnes è un’isola incontaminata e incredibilmente placida. L’isola è lunga circa un chilometro e mezzo ed è collegata alla vicina Gugh da un lembo di sabbia che emerge con la bassa marea. 

È un luogo in cui dominano meravigliosi contrasti: dagli affioramenti rocciosi che contraddistinguono il lato occidentale più esposto, fino alle spiagge paradisiache nelle calette protette, per non parlare della tranquillità particolarmente magica che pervade la striscia di sabbia tra St. Agnes e Gugh. Nell’entroterra si scorgono cottage pittoreschi e una trapunta di campi fioriti, mentre il faro domina il punto più alto dell’isola. St. Agnes è anche una comunità florida sia dal punto di vista agricolo che industriale e creativo. 

È un’isola che invita all’avventura. Andate alla ricerca del labirinto circolare di ciottoli sulla spiaggia; ammirate le pile di sassi e gli omini di petra che punteggiano Wingletang Down o perlustrate la spiaggia in cerca dei tesori lasciati dai relitti a Beady Pool. Periglis Beach è il punto perfetto per fare un picnic e un paradiso per ogni collezionista di conchiglie. Offre anche viste mozzafiato sull’isola di Annet, una zona di protezione speciale per gli uccelli, nonché su Western Rocks e Bishop Rock. C’è inoltre l’Old Man of Gugh, una roccia alta tre metri che pare sia associata a rituali risalenti all’età del bronzo. 

Naturalmente, c’è sempre l’opzione di fare una semplice nuotata o sedersi in uno dei ristoranti e bar dell’isola e osservare il viavai assaporando i prodotti del posto o sorseggiando una birra nel pub Turk’s Head.

St Agnes Boating is working with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust to promote the island’s wildlife. Every Wednesday we have a Wildlife Trust Ranger onboard who is our guide. The Spirit travels to Annet, the protected island where the seabirds nest and then onto the Western Rocks towards the Bishop Rock Lighthouse every Wednesday afternoon.
