A Floral Wonderland

Gardens

Tresco Abbey Garden is a year-round treasure on the Isles of Scilly, offering something unique with every season.

Originally created in the 19th century by Augustus Smith, the garden is a stunning mix of exotic plants, Mediterranean flora, and rare species from across the globe, all thriving in the island’s mild, sheltered microclimate.

Spring: As the season unfolds, the garden comes to life with a spectacular display of vibrant flowers, including daffodils, tulips, and camellias, creating a colorful, uplifting atmosphere. The lush greenery and fresh blooms make it an ideal spot for springtime exploration.

Summer: In the summer months, the garden is a full explosion of life with towering echiums, aloe plants, and proteas from warmer climates, adding a unique tropical flair. The warm, sunny weather brings out the full splendor of the plants, and you can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the winding paths, soaking in the beauty of the exotic flowers in full bloom.

Autumn: As the weather cools, the garden transforms into a rich palette of autumnal colors. The Mediterranean and subtropical plants continue to flourish, while the garden’s trees provide a stunning array of golden and russet hues. It’s a time to appreciate the year-round resilience of the plants, still thriving in the mild climate.

Winter: Even in the colder months, Tresco Abbey Garden remains a serene, peaceful retreat. The shelter provided by the surrounding hedges keeps the garden warmer than the rest of the island, and while there may be fewer blooms, the structure and beauty of the plants, along with the starkness of winter, offer a quieter, more reflective atmosphere.

What makes Tresco Abbey Garden truly special is its unique design and the fact that it’s home to plants from all five Mediterranean floral regions, many of which would be difficult to see in their native habitats without traveling far across the globe. The clever use of hedges to protect the garden from harsh winds and salt has created a thriving, vibrant ecosystem, making it a botanical marvel that continues to captivate visitors year-round.
