BY SEASON

Spring (March to May)

  • Temperature: 9–14°C (48–57°F)
  • Overview: Spring arrives early in the Isles of Scilly compared to mainland Britain. The islands burst into colour with blooming flowers, particularly daffodils and the fragrant narcissi, which thrive here.
  • Rainfall: Moderate, but there are plenty of dry, sunny spells.
  • Winds: Generally light to moderate, though occasional Atlantic breezes can be felt.
  • What to Expect: A peaceful time to visit with fewer tourists and pleasant weather for outdoor activities such as walking or exploring gardens like Tresco Abbey Garden. It also kick-starts the islands’ annual programme of festivals with Walk Scilly (April) and the World Pilot Gig Championships (May).

Summer (June to August)

  • Temperature: 15–21°C (59–70°F)
  • Overview: Summers are warm but rarely over hot, with long daylight hours. The sea temperature also warms up, making it an excellent time for water activities such as kayaking, sailing, wild-swimming and snorkelling.
  • Rainfall: Relatively low compared to other seasons, but occasional showers may occur.
  • Winds: Light breezes provide cooling relief.
  • What to Expect: The busiest season for tourism, with a lively atmosphere, plenty of outdoor activities, markets, and al fresco dining. Exploring Scilly’s beaches and scenic coastal walks are especially popular.

Autumn (September to November)

  • Temperature: 11–17°C (52–63°F)
  • Overview: Autumn in the Isles of Scilly is mild and often sunnier than on the mainland. September often feels like an extension of summer.
  • Rainfall: Increases slightly as the season progresses.
  • Winds: Winds can pick up, particularly in late autumn.
  • What to Expect: A tranquil vibe returns to the islands. The scenery is stunning, with golden hues and opportunities to spot migrating birds, making it a great time for nature enthusiasts.

Winter (December to February)

  • Temperature: 7–12°C (45–54°F)
  • Overview: Winters are mild and wet, with few frosts or snow. Despite the season, the Isles of Scilly remain one of the warmest places in the UK.
  • Rainfall: Higher than in other seasons, with occasional stormy weather.
  • Winds: Stronger winds are more common, especially during Atlantic storms.
  • What to Expect: A peaceful, off-season experience with dramatic coastal scenery and cosy places to stay. While some attractions and services may be closed, it’s a great time for storm-watching or quiet retreats.

General Tips

  • Packing: Layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes are essential year-round. Get ready to explore!
  • Travel: Check transport schedules, especially in winter, as weather conditions such as low cloud or fog and strong winds can sometimes disrupt ferry or flight services.
  • Seasonal Highlights: Spring for flowers, summer for beach activities, autumn for birdwatching, and winter for a serene escape.
